Prepare Your Air Conditioner for Summer With These Five Tips

Don't let the heat have you beat! Use these helpful Summer Tips for Air Conditioners to ensure your are ready for the warm days ahead.

We all know Canadian weather can be a little unpredictable, and the last thing anyone wants to deal with is an air conditioner that doesn’t work when the hot weather finally arrives.

Use these helpful tips to ensure your air conditioner is ready for the warm days ahead.

1. Change your filter

Most people don’t know that your furnace filter also filters all the air running through your home duct system- this includes the air coming from your air conditioner.

One of the easiest ways to ensure everything runs smoothly during your transition from heating to cooling season and get the best air quality possible is to ensure you check your filter often, and change it regularly. We recommend changing it at least once every six months, or more often if you smoke in your home, burn candles, have a wood burning fireplace, or if you’ve recently done construction in the home.

Need a replacement filter? We sell those.

2. Check the thermostat

Always make sure that your thermostat is working properly and is set to the correct settings. If you’re looking for even more control, we recommend considering a smart thermostat like an Ecobee. We’ve sold and dealt with many brands and that is by far our favourite. Smart thermostats will allow you to fine-tune your temperature control and automatically adjust settings based on programming or time of day. They can help you reduce energy bills and increase appliance efficiency.

That being said, it’s also important to remember that cooling an entire house takes a lot of energy and work from your appliance. Turning your Air Conditioner off during the day or when you are away will typically cause you to use more energy to re-cool your entire home when you turn it back on. We suggest always keeping it on and set on a moderate setting to ensure the best efficiency and results.

3. Remove debris from around the outside unit

If your air conditioner is surrounded by trees, bushes or other items that could cause build up or debris to form on, or inside your unit this can lead to performance below your expectations. Regularly check for and clean away any debris to ensure you avoid costly service calls or repairs.

A lot of people cover their unit for the winter, but we don’t typically recommend that anymore. These days units like Amana are built for the weather conditions in Canada and can stand up to a tough winter. Covering your unit increases the likelihood that animals or rodents will nest inside when the colder months arrive, and this could destroy the parts or wiring to your unit. It’s always a good idea to try and look inside the unit with a flashlight to ensure there are no nests or rodents inside.

4. Test the AC unit

Once you’ve removed any debris and ensured there is nothing that will cause damage to your unit once powered on, you should power on your unit for at least 30 minutes to make sure it is working. Ensure that cold air is being blown through and that there are no strange noises or smells and do a quick visual inspection to ensure no parts are missing or damaged. If you discover anything strange, you should always contact a reputable and licensed HVAC company like us, to assist with any diagnostics or service/repairs needed.

5. Get Annual Maintenance and Cleanings performed by a reputable and licensed HVAC Business.

The best recommendation we can give to be fully prepared for summer weather is to get regular cleaning, maintenance and inspections performed by a reputable and licensed HVAC company like us.

Maintenance should always be performed on all gas appliances like furnaces annually for safety reasons, but should also be done on air conditioners to ensure everything is in working order and no repairs or changes to maintenance are required.

Most appliance warranties are only valid if you ensure regular maintenance is performed- just like a car. Regular maintenance helps keep your unit running as efficiently as possible and helps reduce the likelihood of costly surprise repair bills.

Our Annual ‘Magic Maintenance’ inspection and cleaning service is only $149.99 per appliance, and includes a 90-day diagnostic warranty. If anything goes wrong with your appliance within 90 days of our maintenance, we will diagnose the problem at no cost to you (Parts and repairs are extra). If you’re getting multiple appliances maintained at once we offer bulk discounts.

Want to avoid costly repair bills altogether? Consider getting a maintenance or protection plan for your appliance. We offer a variety of plans with varying levels of coverage to suit your needs and budget.
