Signs You Might Need Duct Cleaning
If your home doesn’t feel as comfortable as it should, your air ducts might be part of the problem. It’s easy to forget about them, since they’re hidden behind walls and ceilings- but when they’re dirty or clogged, they can affect your air quality, energy bills, and even how your HVAC system performs. Here’s a few signs you might need duct cleaning.
Your Home Gets Dusty Too Quickly
Do you notice dust building on surfaces just a day or two after cleaning? While some dust is normal, excessive buildup could mean your air ducts are circulating dust throughout your home.
When dirt, debris, and even pet dander collect inside your ductwork, they don’t just stay there. Every time your system runs, those particles get pushed back into your living space. If you feel like you’re constantly wiping furniture, your ducts may need attention.
Uneven Airflow from Room to Room
Have you ever walked from one room to another and noticed a big difference in temperature? Maybe one room feels too hot while another stays cool. This could point to blocked or dirty ducts. When airflow is restricted, your system must work harder to push air through, and some areas won’t get enough of it.
Over time, this not only affects comfort but can also increase wear and tear on your HVAC system.
Strange Odours Coming from Vents
If you notice a musty or stale smell when your heating or cooling system turns on, your air ducts could be the cause. Dust, mould, and debris can build up inside the ducts, creating unpleasant odours that spread throughout your home. In some cases, trapped moisture can make things worse and lead to mould growth.
If the smell doesn’t go away after cleaning your home, it may be coming from deeper inside your system.
Allergy or Respiratory Issues Getting Worse
If you or someone in your home has allergies, dirty air ducts can make things more uncomfortable.
When contaminants circulate through the air, they can trigger symptoms like:
- Sneezing
- Coughing
- Itchy eyes
- Congestion
Even if you regularly change your air filters, buildup inside your ducts can still affect the air you breathe. Cleaner ducts can help create a healthier indoor environment, especially during seasons when your HVAC system runs more often. Antimicrobial fogging applied during the duct cleaning process can also help kill over 99.9% of bacteria, germs, viruses and fungi and mould spores.
Higher Energy Bills Without a Clear Reason
Have you noticed your energy bills creeping up even though your usage hasn’t changed much?
Dirty ducts can restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder to maintain the temperature you want. When that happens, it uses more energy and runs longer than necessary. Over time, this can lead to higher costs and unnecessary strain on your equipment.
It’s Been Years Since Your Last Cleaning
Sometimes the biggest sign is simply time. If you can’t remember the last time your air ducts were cleaned, or if it’s been several years- it’s probably time to have them checked.
Regular maintenance helps keep your system running efficiently and can prevent bigger issues down the line. At Ashton Heating & Cooling, we can help you understand what your system needs without any pressure.
Take the Next Step Toward Better Air Quality
If you’re noticing any of these things, they could be signs you might need duct cleaning. Professional air duct cleaning can improve airflow, reduce dust, and help your home feel more comfortable overall.
A proper inspection can give you a clear idea of what is going on and what needs to be done. If you’re ready to improve your home’s air quality, contact us today to schedule an appointment.
frequently asked questions about duct cleaning
Despite what some companies will tell you, duct cleaning doesn’t need to happen annually or even every other year.
Most homes only need it every 3-6 years. Frequency depends on a few factors: how many pets you have, whether anyone in the home has dust or pet dander allergies, and whether you’ve recently done renovations or construction.
If you check more than one of those boxes, lean closer to every 3 years. Otherwise, every 5-6 years is typically plenty.
At Ashton Heating & Cooling, duct cleaning starts at $279 for the first 10 registers (supply and return combined), then $12 per additional register.
Most homes fall between $279–$449 depending on size. Optional add-ons include main-floor dryer vent cleaning ($79), second-story dryer vent cleaning ($139), and anti-microbial fogging ($99). All-in, most full cleanings land between $300 and $550.
Not really – at least not properly. Surface vent cleaning (vacuuming the grills, wiping the visible openings) is fine to do yourself, but actual interior duct cleaning requires equipment most homeowners don’t have: a truck-mounted vacuum, high-pressure air compressors, and a rod-and-brush system that can reach deep into the main duct lines.
Here’s what you can do on your own: Check and change your furnace filter regularly, vacuum visible registers, and keep your dryer lint trap clean after every load.
A thorough whole-home duct cleaning takes approximately 2-3 hours, depending on the size of your home and the number of registers.
We block off a full 3-hour window for every appointment to make sure we have enough time to do it right. Larger homes or homes with more registers may push toward the 3-hour mark; smaller homes are typically done in closer to 2.
These solve two different problems. Duct cleaning removes dust, debris, pet dander and allergens that have built up inside your ducts over time. We recommend Duct cleaning when the main issue is air quality. Common signs of needing a duct cleaning include excessive household dust, allergy symptoms, visible debris around vents.
Duct sealing (Aeroseal) fixes leaks, holes and poorly connected sections in the ductwork itself. We recommend Aeroseal Duct Sealing when conditioned air is escaping before it reaches your rooms. Common signs you need Duct Sealing: hot/cold spots between rooms, rising energy bills, an HVAC system that runs constantly but doesn’t keep up.
If you’re not sure which you need, our Aeroseal diagnostic actually includes a full whole-home duct cleaning AND a leakage report – so you get both questions answered in one visit.
